WinnaVegas Casino
WinnaVegas Casino today announced a $30 million expansion of its casino near Sloan, Iowa. Plans call for construction of a 100-room hotel and convention facility and the addition of more than 300 slot machines and gaming space.
Construction is expected to begin later this summer, with completion anticipated by the end of the year.
Casino officials predicted the expansion would help turn draw additional visitors, paving the way for future expansion designed to turn the complex into a major resort destination.
"This project is just the first step in a greater expansion," WinnaVegas general manager Silas M. Cleveland, Sr. said.
WinnaVegas, owned and operated by the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska, opened in 1992 on tribal land just three miles west of Interstate 29, near the Missouri River. Since then, the 24,353 square-foot casino has struggled to compete with larger riverboats and land-based casinos in Omaha and Sioux City.
As part of the expansion announced today, the number of slot machines at WinnaVegas would grow from 648 to 950. There would also would be room for additional table games and a poker room.
The on-site hotel would feature a pool with a "lazy river" and meeting rooms accomodating about 400 guests.
The exterior and interior of the existing casino also would get a facelift, with the design featuring natural materials and colors to complement the natural setting of the nearby Missouri River. A new public promenade will be added to the entry to the hotel, meeting rooms and buffet.
"When this project is done, the entire property will be bigger, more comfortable, extremely convenient and overall much better," Cleveland said.
WinnaVegas will remain open during construction, with no interruption to casino or food operations, he said.
